GHB Recipes

Liquid GHB recipe

This information is freely given to anyone wishing to make GHB. A number of other methods can be found on the Web, but this is probably the most straightforward. The one from Chem-R-Us is good too (I think it's on Lycaeum). While speaking of Chem-R-Us, check his posts on the newsgroups (mainly alt.drugs.chemistry and alt.drugs.ghb). In spite of his abrupt style his posts are usually very informative and he add some color. Chem-R-Us is a bodybuilder and his style is like what you can find on misc.fitness.weights.

Never mix GHB with other substances - especially alcohol or other CNS depressants (e.g. sleeping pills).

Safety

Wear gloves and safety glasses at all times. If any of the reagents or intermediates contacts the skin, wash well with cold water.

You will need :

1. 135 grams (120 ml) of gamma butyrolactone

2. 61 grams of Sodium Hydroxide or

91 grams of Potassium Hydroxide

3. Papers to test PH

What to do:

1. Place the content of the gamma butyrolactone bottle in a stainless steel or pyrex glass saucepan. Do not use aluminum cookware to make GHB.

2. Place the content of the NaOH or KOH bottle in the same saucepan.

3. Put SLOWLY around a half cup of warm distilled water in it. Put a cover (fast! the reaction may be immediate) on it but not tight.

4. Wait a little it will start reacting on itself. If it doesn't (after 2-3 minutes), heat it a LITTLE (once it reacts remove it from the stove).

4.5 If there is some NaOH not dissolved, stir it up till it is.

5. (This step is optional, some like it like that and others prefer to heat the solution a little.) After it's finished. Start heating it slowly. You will see it starting boiling. Don't overheat! It can burn. Do it for one hour. Don't forget to add water if you make it boil for a long time (keep at least 300 ml in your container. This step will give a solution with less unreacted gamma-butyrolactone. You do it mostly for the taste cause lactone will be converted to GHB anyway by your body. You may use a microwave oven too but put the power to medium, use Pyrex glass, do it in 5 minutes increment and be sure to have enough water (300 ml). This way seems easier to not burn the GHB.

5.5. Between step 4 and 6 you might see a white compound on the side of the saucepan (it doesn't happen every time). Don't throw it away, it's GHB. When you will add water it will dissolve.

6. When you are finished, put it in a measuring cup (Pyrex) and fill it with water (when I'm in a hurry to taste it I use ice) to 900 ml (around 4 cups). That way you'll have around 1 grams per teaspoon.

7. Measure the PH. If it's higher than 7 add vinegar to lower it to 7 - 8. It can take 50 - 75 ml of vinegar.

8. Fill with water to get a solution of 1000 ml.

9. To store it, use a mason glass jar with a plastic cover. Draw the poison logo on it (very important! you don't want a kid to take a full glass of GHB). Place it in the fridge, the taste is better when it's cold. Please use a method to be sure nobody will throw your GHB away or drink it. Several people told me that someone put their GHB down the drain thinking it was water and there were some cases of overdose where people drink the stuff thinking it was something else.



Powdered GHB recipe

For step 3, use electric oven only. In a gas oven, the pilot light may ignite alcohol fumes, causing fire hazard.

Reagents :

1. 60 grams of NaOH

2. 120 ml of gamma butyrolactone

3. 1000 ml of pure ethanol

These quantities are not fixed - use more or less as needed, but keep the proportions the same. The NaOH can be dissolved in less ethanol, but these proportions make the process easier and faster.

The ethanol must be pure (no water in it) - don't use vodka. GHB will not crystalize if there is water in the solution. Denatured ethanol can also be used, but be sure to let it completely evaporate before ingesting it. Methanol can also be used, but this is toxic, and excess must be removed before ingestion. If methanol is used, only 500ml is required, but be sure all the methanol is evaporated before ingesting it (check there is no methanol odor left).

Obtaining the reagents:

NaOH, denatured ethanol and methanol are very easy to find. Just look up chemical products in the yellow pages. Those chemicals are so common that you won't be asked what you are going to do with it. Gamma-butyrolactone is difficult to find. Several companies sell it on the net - make a search using Deja. Other companies sell complete kits for preparing GHB.

Equipment needed :

1. Screw cap bottle larger than 1000ml; if you choose plastic use HDPE, (it will be clearly marked on the bottom)

2. Glass container at least 1200 ml. in volume.

3. Coffee filter papers (2)

Method :

1. Dissolve the NaOH in the ethanol - place the ethanol in the screw cap bottle and add the NaOH. Shake and allow to stand until cool. Continue until all the NaOH has dissolved. Be sure to release the cap frequently to release pressure.

2. When all the NaOH has dissolved (this can take an hour of shaking and waiting) pour it into the glass pot and add the gamma-butyrolactone. A precipitate (this is the GHB) will form. Allow to stand for an hour.

3. After allowing it to stand, filter the product through the 2 coffee filters (placed inside each other), collecting the precipitate. Dry the precipitate by placing it in an oven on the lowest setting for 24 hours. Use electric oven only! In a gas oven, the pilot light may ignite alcohol fumes, causing fire hazard.

4. You can keep it in the powdered form (keep it in an airtight bag since it is hygroscopic and will absorb water from the atmosphere). Alternatively dissolve it in 750 ml of water; this will give a solution containing about 1g of GHB per teaspoon. Don't ingest the neat solution in case there is unreacted NaOH which can burn the skin - mix it in 1/2 cup of water of fruit juice.


Grain Alcohol GHB recipe

This synthesis is similar to the other one but lots of people wrote me to say that they have difficulty finding pure alcohol. The other chemicals can be bought from GHB kits suppliers but not pure alcohol. So I changed my synthesis a little to use 95 % grain alcohol.

3. 40 oz (1 liter) of 95 % alcohol (Everclear?)

These quantities are not fixed - use more or less as needed, but keep the proportions the same. The NaOH can be dissolved in less alcohol, but these proportions make the process easier and faster. I know alcohol from the liquor store is expensive but you will use it several times.

Obtaining the reagents

NaOH is very easy to find. Just look up chemical products in the yellow pages. Alcohol (95%) can be found at your liquor store. Gamma-butyrolactone is difficult to find. Several companies sell it on the net - make a search using Dejanews. Others companies sell complete kits for preparing GHB.

Equipment needed :

1. Funnels. One for a bottle (narrow mouth), one for a mason jar (wide mouth).

2. Glass container (mason jar) at least 1000 ml. in volume (2).

3. Coffee filter papers (at least 4).

A mason jar is a glass container used to store homemade food like jam, pickles etc...

Method :

1. Remove half a cup (125 ml) of alcohol from the 40 oz. Put it aside. You will use it next time.

2. Put the NaOH in the bottle of alcohol using the funnel. Shake with the cap on and allow to stand until cool. Continue until all the NaOH has dissolved. Be sure to release the cap frequently to release pressure.

3. When all the NaOH has dissolved (this can take an hour of shaking and waiting) pour it into the mason jar and add the gamma-butyrolactone. A precipitate (this is the GHB) will form. Allow to stand for an hour. Maybe you will have to stir it to start the reaction.

4. After allowing it to stand, filter the product through the 2 coffee filters (placed inside each other), collecting the precipitate. To filter it you can put the coffee filters in the second funnel (special funnel made for mason jar) placed on another mason jar. Keep your alcohol, you will need it.

5. Dry the precipitate by placing it in an oven on the lowest setting for several hours. Do not dry GHB in gas oven! Pilot light may ignite alcohol fumes, causing fire hazard. Use electric oven only.

6. Place the alcohol you have in the mason jar in the freezer. After several hours, you will see a lot of new GHB in the bottle. Filter it again with new coffee filter and put it in the oven too.

7. Keep your alcohol. Just put it back in the alcohol bottle with the alcohol you put aside. Draw a poison sign or something like that on the bottle so nobody drinks it. Next time you make GHB you will use it. This alcohol is already saturated with GHB so next time you will get more GHB because less will stay in the alcohol. You will probably see that over time it works less every time. There is water in the NaOH so each time you add a little more water to your alcohol. I don't know how many times you can reuse it.

8. You can keep your GHB in powdered form (keep it in an airtight bag since it is hygroscopic and will absorb water from the atmosphere). Alternatively dissolve it in 750 ml of water; this will give a solution containing about 1g of GHB per teaspoon. GHB Doseage

This is the most complicated part - it's very easy to overdose on GHB; however an overdose will usualy only bring on sleep, or at worst vomiting provided the GHB is not mixed with other drugs or alcohol - do NOT mix with alcohol. GHB has the effect of enhancing any drug that it is taken with, but it does not mix well with alcohol, or depressants such as sleeping pills, heroin or morphine.

The best way to judge the correct dose is to take it on an empty stomach - the effects are much more predictable. Begin by taking a small dose 1 - 2.5 g depending on body weight. Onset is quite rapid - about 15 minutes, and the effects (mild euphoria, sense of well being) last for about 2 hours. If after 1/2 hour you don't feel anything take a little more (0.5 - 1g). If you get up to 4g before any effects are felt, don't take 4g all at once the next time - build up gradually.

If you feel nauseous you probably took too much. Try eating a little it may help.

Note - If GHB is taken shortly after a meal, the effects are masked, as the GHB is absorbed by the stomach contents. Onset will be longer and less pronounced - it is very easy to overdose in this way, and end up either passed out, or vomiting - or both.

CAUTION- do not drive a car or operate machinery under the influence of GHB.
